YouTube currently requires an artist-focused channel, at least one official music release delivered by a distributor or label, and compliance with YouTube policies. What is a YouTube Official Artist Channel?
An Official Artist Channel, usually shortened to OAC, is YouTube's artist-specific channel format. YouTube says it can consolidate subscribers and content from your existing artist channel, Topic Channel and Vevo channel when applicable, while also giving access to artist-focused tools such as Analytics for Artists.
Your Topic Channel does not simply disappear. Distributor-delivered Art Tracks can remain associated with the Topic Channel while also being linked to the Official Artist Channel.

YouTube Official Artist Channel eligibility in 2026
Artist-focused channel: you must own and operate a YouTube channel focused on one artist or band.
Official release: at least one official music release must be on YouTube through a distributor or label.
Policy compliance: the channel must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines, Terms of Service and copyright policies.
Music-industry connection: YouTube also requires one qualifying relationship, such as a YouTube Partner Manager, YPP participation, a qualifying label network or distribution through a listed music partner.
YouTube recommends having at least one public video on the artist channel in addition to the official distributed release. Requests for empty channels can be rejected or require extra verification.
What DistroKid requires before you apply
DistroKid's current OAC process adds a few practical requirements. Your YouTube channel should be dedicated to the artist, its channel name should match the artist name, and you should upload at least one regular video. DistroKid specifically says Shorts do not count for this requirement.
You also need at least one DistroKid release that has already been delivered to YouTube Music and is live on YouTube. If a new artist does not immediately appear inside DistroKid's OAC tool, DistroKid recommends waiting a few days after the first release becomes live.

How to claim a YouTube Official Artist Channel through DistroKid
1. Prepare a dedicated YouTube artist channel with the same artist name you use for distribution.
2. Upload at least one normal public video to that channel.
3. Release at least one song through DistroKid and include YouTube Music in the delivery.
4. Wait until the distributed release is live on YouTube.
5. In DistroKid, open Features → Special Access → YouTube Official Artist Channel.
6. Choose the correct artist, authenticate the correct YouTube account and submit the claim.
DistroKid says OAC claiming is included in Musician, Musician Plus and Ultimate plans.
How long does the OAC process take?
DistroKid says the change can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and advises allowing up to six weeks for the Official Artist Channel designation to appear.
Do not repeatedly create new channels or submit different channels while you are waiting. The important part is that the original request uses the correct artist channel and correct Google/YouTube account.
Important warning: choose the correct channel
This is one of the most important details in the process. DistroKid states that established OAC claims cannot be undone or disconnected through DistroKid, and OAC status cannot simply be transferred to another channel. Check the channel carefully before authenticating and submitting the request.
What happens to your Topic Channel?
A Topic Channel is the auto-generated YouTube channel that stores distributor-delivered Art Tracks and helps make your music available in YouTube Music. You do not normally log into or edit that Topic Channel directly.
After an OAC is established, your distributor-delivered music can be linked into the Official Artist Channel experience while the Topic Channel remains part of YouTube's music-delivery system.

Build the rest of your YouTube release system
An OAC improves the artist structure of your channel, but it does not replace a content strategy. Full videos, Shorts, Related Video links, playlists and regular artist posts still do the work of turning discovery into repeat listening.
