The short version
Do not buy every Extra by default.
For many independent artists, the best approach is selective: use Discovery Pack if its databases matter to you, Social Media Pack only when your music is eligible and UGC monetization is relevant, Leave a Legacy for releases you want protected if your membership ends, and skip technical extras you do not actually need.

1. Discovery Pack — inexpensive, but not essential for everyone
Discovery Pack adds your release to music-information and recognition databases including Gracenote, Luminate, ACRCloud and Jaxsta. DistroKid currently charges $0.99 per song per year.
This is one of the lower-cost recurring Extras. It can make sense if broader music recognition, credits databases and chart-related data systems are useful to your catalog. It is not required to get your music onto Spotify, Apple Music or the major streaming platforms.

2. Store Maximizer — convenience more than necessity
Store Maximizer costs $7.95 per release per year and automatically delivers that release to new stores and streaming services DistroKid adds later.
The value is convenience: you do not need to revisit old releases when DistroKid adds a new partner. For an artist with a large catalog, however, an annual per-release charge can compound. If you are comfortable manually reviewing new store opportunities, this is one of the easier Extras to skip.

3. Social Media Pack — useful for eligible original recordings
Social Media Pack is designed to identify and monetize user-generated videos that natively contain your music on services such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. DistroKid currently charges $4.95 per single per year or $14.95 per album per year and keeps 20% of the revenue generated through this monetization service.
This Extra can be valuable when people are likely to use your original recordings in their own videos. It is less attractive if your music gets little UGC activity or if your recording is not eligible for Content ID-style fingerprinting.
YouTube Content ID eligibility is strict. DistroKid says a release submitted for Content ID must not contain beats, loops, samples, sound effects or other audio you do not exclusively own. That can make many sample-based or non-exclusive productions ineligible.

4. Leave a Legacy — useful for selected long-term releases
Leave a Legacy is a one-time $29 fee for a single or $49 for an album of two or more tracks. It keeps that release available on streaming services if your DistroKid membership later lapses or you cancel your subscription.
It does not replace your annual membership while the account is active, and it applies per release rather than to your entire catalog. That makes it more sensible for selected evergreen releases than as an automatic purchase for every upload.

5. Cover Song Licensing — required when you use DistroKid's cover process
DistroKid currently charges $12 per cover song per year for its cover-song licensing service. Unlike the optional marketing and discovery Extras, this is not something to casually skip if you are using DistroKid to license an eligible cover.
You also need to identify the song as a cover during upload. DistroKid says cover licenses cannot be added after the release has already been uploaded.

6. Loudness Normalization — usually unnecessary if your master is already finished correctly
For $2.99 per track as a one-time fee, DistroKid can adjust the track to -14 LUFS integrated with a -1 dB true-peak maximum before sending the adjusted audio to the selected services.
If you already have a professionally prepared final master, automatic loudness processing may not be necessary. Treat this as a corrective convenience, not as a substitute for mastering decisions.
7. Dolby Atmos — only if you actually have an Atmos master
DistroKid currently charges $26.99 per track as a one-time fee for Dolby Atmos delivery. The audio must already be properly mixed for Atmos; DistroKid checks the file and says you will not be charged if the file is not valid.
Do not buy this simply because spatial audio sounds like a premium feature. It makes sense when you have a real Atmos mix prepared for supported services such as Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon.
8. Beatport — only relevant to eligible electronic music
The Beatport Extra currently costs $9.99 per month and enables unlimited delivery of eligible releases to Beatport. DistroKid states that the release needs an Electronic genre and subgenre to qualify.
For a producer actively releasing electronic music, this can be relevant. For singer-songwriters, worship artists, rock artists or most non-electronic catalogs, it is an easy skip.
Which DistroKid Extras are worth it?
Discovery Pack: reasonable low-cost add-on if you value recognition and industry databases.
Store Maximizer: useful for convenience; less compelling for large catalogs because the annual per-release fee accumulates.
Social Media Pack: potentially valuable when you own the recording fully and expect meaningful UGC use.
Leave a Legacy: strongest for selected important releases you want protected after cancellation or payment failure.
Cover licensing: use when required for an eligible cover release.
Loudness Normalization: usually skip if your final master is already technically ready.
Dolby Atmos: only buy when you have a true Atmos mix.
Beatport: only for artists whose eligible electronic catalog belongs there.
Can you add Extras later?
Many Extras can be added after upload from the release page in your DistroKid dashboard. DistroKid specifically lists Social Media Pack, Discovery Pack and Store Maximizer as options that can be added later. Cover licensing is an important exception: it needs to be selected during the original upload process.

Keep Extras separate from the basic release decision
A useful budgeting habit is to decide whether DistroKid itself is the right distributor first, then evaluate Extras release by release. A low headline membership price can become much higher if you automatically add several recurring Extras to a large catalog.
DistroKid Extras 2026 FAQ
Are DistroKid Extras included in the membership price? No. The Extras on this page are optional add-ons or separate services billed in addition to the core DistroKid membership.
What does Leave a Legacy do? It is a one-time per-release add-on designed to keep an eligible release in stores if the DistroKid membership later ends.
Does DistroKid Content ID cost extra? DistroKid handles YouTube and other social-platform monetization through the optional Social Media Pack, which has its own recurring fee and revenue share.
Can I add DistroKid Extras after release? Many Extras can be added later from the release page, including Social Media Pack, Discovery Pack and Store Maximizer. Cover licensing is an important exception and must be selected during upload.
Is Store Maximizer necessary? No. It is mainly a convenience feature that automatically sends a release to new stores DistroKid adds later.
Should every release have Leave a Legacy? Not necessarily. Because it is priced per release, it is often more economical to reserve it for important long-term catalog releases rather than adding it automatically to everything.
Considering DistroKid?
Use Extras selectively instead of checking every box.
DistroKid can still be cost-effective for independent artists who release frequently, especially when optional add-ons are chosen deliberately rather than automatically.
