The short answer
For an important release, four weeks is the comfortable target.
DistroKid currently recommends uploading about four weeks in advance if you want the release to go live everywhere on the same date. That buffer also gives you time to verify artist mapping, prepare pre-release content and pitch the song inside Spotify for Artists.
Why four weeks is better than a last-minute upload
Distribution has two stages: your distributor reviews and delivers the release, then each streaming service processes it on its own schedule. A release can arrive quickly, but delays and manual reviews still happen.
DistroKid says that if a specific date matters across all platforms, artists should choose a release date at least four weeks ahead. Its current upload guidance gives the same four-week recommendation for synchronized release timing.

Spotify needs the song before release day
Spotify for Artists lets eligible artists pitch an upcoming unreleased song to playlist editors. Spotify currently says the music should be delivered at least seven days before release so editors have time to listen.
If you pitch an unreleased song at least seven days before release, Spotify also says it will place that song in your followers' Release Radar playlists. Pitching does not guarantee an editorial playlist placement.

Why two weeks is a minimum, not the ideal
DistroKid currently recommends uploading at least two weeks before release if you want enough time for the song to appear under Upcoming in Spotify for Artists and be available for editorial pitching.
Two weeks can work, but it leaves less room for mapping problems, artwork corrections, metadata changes or store delays. For a release you care about, four weeks gives you a much healthier margin.

Can every DistroKid plan schedule a future release?
No. DistroKid currently says custom future release dates are available on Musician Plus and Ultimate. On the basic Musician plan, the release goes live after processing rather than being held for a future date you choose.

A simple four-week release schedule
4 weeks before: upload the final master, artwork and metadata; choose the future release date.
3 weeks before: check artist-page mapping, claim or review artist dashboards, prepare smart links and visual assets.
2 weeks before: confirm the release is visible in Spotify for Artists and submit the editorial pitch once eligible.
1 week before: push teasers, Shorts, Reels, Stories and pre-release links; verify every public-facing detail.
Release day: publish the full-song content, update links, post the strongest short-form clip and respond to listeners.
What if the song is already finished and you only have a few days?
You can still release it, but separate two goals: getting the song online quickly and running a coordinated campaign. If the release date is flexible, moving it back is often better than forcing a rushed launch with no time for pitching, corrections or promotion.
If the release date cannot move, upload immediately, verify the metadata carefully and focus promotion on the period after the track is live rather than pretending you still have a pre-release window.

Music Upload Timing 2026 FAQ
How early should you upload an important release? Around four weeks is a comfortable planning target because it leaves time for store delivery, artist-profile tasks, pitching, pre-save setup and promotion.
Is two weeks enough? It can be, but it leaves less margin for delivery delays, metadata corrections and pre-release promotion.
Can DistroKid Musician schedule a future release date? DistroKid reserves custom future release-date control for Musician Plus and Ultimate.
Should you delay a release if everything is already ready? That depends on the campaign. For a strategically promoted release, extra lead time can be more useful than rushing to publish immediately.
Planning a scheduled release?
DistroKid Musician Plus is the more practical tier when release dates matter.
Future release-date scheduling is one of the clearest reasons an independent artist may prefer Musician Plus over the basic Musician plan.
