The short version
Upload early, find your Spotify Artist URI, then claim the profile.
For a new artist name, upload the release well ahead of the release date. After DistroKid has delivered it to Spotify, use DistroKid's Spotify Looker-Upper to find the Artist URI, then submit that URI through Spotify for Artists. This gives you time to manage the profile before release day instead of trying to fix everything after the song is already live.
1. You cannot manually create a Spotify artist profile first
Spotify creates an artist profile automatically after music is delivered through a label or distributor. Spotify's own support documentation says artists cannot create the profile manually before any music has been delivered.
The important distinction is that the profile can exist inside Spotify before the release becomes public. Once that happens, you may be able to claim it through Spotify for Artists.

2. Upload your first release early enough
DistroKid currently recommends uploading at least four weeks before the release date when you want enough time to claim a brand-new Spotify for Artists profile before the first release goes live.
That lead time also gives you room for store ingestion, artist-page checks, profile setup and an editorial pitch if the unreleased song becomes available in Spotify for Artists early enough.
3. Wait until DistroKid has delivered the release to Spotify
After upload, wait until DistroKid shows that the release has been successfully sent to services. Spotify still needs time to ingest the release and create the underlying artist page.
DistroKid says Spotify URI information may take roughly a day to become available after delivery. If the Looker-Upper does not find the release yet, try again after a little more time rather than creating another upload.
4. Find your Spotify Artist URI with DistroKid's Looker-Upper
Open DistroKid's Spotify Looker-Upper and select the release. The results can show album, track and artist URIs. For Spotify for Artists, you need the Artist URI, not the track URI.
DistroKid's current pre-release claiming guide points artists to its Spotify Looker-Upper at distrokid.com/uri/spotify. If several artists are attached to the release, make sure you copy the URI for the correct artist profile.

5. Submit the profile through Spotify for Artists
Go to Spotify for Artists' claim flow, choose Artist or manager, sign in with a Spotify account and enter the Artist URI when Spotify asks you to identify the artist profile.
Spotify says artist and manager requests can involve identity checks such as links to the artist's website or social channels. Manual review can take a few days. If the profile has already been claimed, the existing team Admin needs to invite you instead.

6. What to do as soon as you get access
Check artist mapping: make sure the upcoming release is attached to the correct artist profile.
Add profile images and bio: make the page look intentional before new listeners arrive.
Add social links and other profile details: these help establish a real artist presence.
Check Upcoming: confirm the unreleased music appears in Spotify for Artists.
Pitch the eligible unreleased song: do this at least seven days before release when possible.
Prepare promotion: connect your Spotify destination to your YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and smart-link campaign.
7. Claiming the profile and Spotify's verification badges are not the same thing
Spotify changed its profile-label system in 2026. A claimed and actively managed Spotify for Artists profile is part of the platform's registered-artist system, while Spotify also has a separate Verified by Spotify authenticity badge that is reviewed under its own criteria.
In other words, do not delay claiming Spotify for Artists because you are waiting for a badge. Profile access is useful on its own because it gives you management, analytics and promotion tools.

Common problems
No Artist URI yet: Spotify may not have ingested the delivered release. Wait and retry.
The wrong artist profile appears: do not continue blindly; resolve the artist mapping with the distributor.
The profile is already claimed: ask the existing Spotify for Artists team Admin to invite you.
Your first release is too close: you may still claim later, but you lose valuable pre-release setup time.
