The short version

Distribute first. Claim Apple Music for Artists after the release is live.

Apple directs independent artists to music distributors for delivery. Prepare the final audio, artwork and metadata, select Apple Music in your distributor, verify the live release, then request Apple Music for Artists access once Apple's current live-content waiting period has been met.

1. Choose a music distributor

Apple tells independent artists and smaller labels to work with a music distributor. The distributor sends the audio, artwork, metadata and release information to Apple Music and the iTunes Store, and also handles delivery issues and royalty reporting.

Apple maintains a distributor directory, but the right service still depends on your release frequency, budget and workflow. If you already use DistroKid, Apple Music can simply be selected as one of the stores during the upload process.

2. Prepare the release before opening the upload form

Have the final master, cover artwork, artist name, song title, songwriter credits, release date and rights information ready first. Fixing metadata after delivery is slower and creates avoidable risk around duplicate artist pages or mismatched releases.

3. Upload the release and select Apple Music

In DistroKid, create the release through the upload form and make sure Apple Music is selected in the store list. Enter the release metadata carefully, upload the final audio and artwork, and review the submission before sending it.

If you are building a coordinated campaign, upload early enough to leave room for store processing, profile checks and promotion rather than relying on a last-minute delivery.

4. Wait for the release to become live on Apple Music

Apple Music for Artists works differently from Spotify for Artists for a first release. Apple currently requires your content to be live on Apple Music for at least five business days before you can claim the artist page.

That means your first priority is accurate distribution. Once the release is live and the waiting period has passed, you can request artist access.

5. Claim Apple Music for Artists

Go to Apple Music for Artists, request access, find your artist page and select one of your releases to confirm you are claiming the correct profile. Apple asks for your role and may use distributor connections, websites and social accounts to verify your relationship to the artist.

Apple states that artists and artist managers can claim a page. The first approved administrator can later add other team members.

6. Set up the artist page before promoting heavily

After approval, use Apple Music for Artists to review analytics and improve the artist presence. Apple provides tools for artist imagery, lyrics, promotional assets, Shazam data and audience insights.

7. Understand Apple pre-adds

Apple supports pre-adds for upcoming eligible releases. A pre-add lets listeners add upcoming music before release so it can appear in their library when the release becomes available.

This is different from a generic cross-platform pre-save page. If you are planning a broader campaign, use a pre-save or smart-link workflow alongside Apple's native tools.

8. Promote the live release with Apple's tools

Apple Music for Artists includes promotional assets and provides access to Linkfire-powered links that can point fans to Apple Music and other streaming services. Apple also provides badges, QR codes and embedded players for campaign use where appropriate.
